Definitely not in Jakarta whereas Bali doesn’t check. Travelling anywhere has risks but Bali is far safer because the Balinese people are not anti westerners. The Bombers were all from other parts of indonesia and many Balinese also lost their lives.
It would not be wise to travel alone in some parts of Indonesia without thoroughly checking you know the customs, clothing and behaviour required. It is a muslim country with very strict codes. Some Indonesians are very rude and aggressive towards foreigners.
The Balinese are Hindu and very peaceful, friendly and delightful people. Big resorts have security check points and vigilant security guards but if your time is up it’s up. The Balinese now have a saying, “A life lived in fear is a life half-lived” .
We visit Bali at least twice a year as we love the place and people.
If you stay in well establish hotel or big hotel in Jakarta, it is no problem. i recommend you to book the big hotel for better security. meanwhile in Bali, you will definitely no problem sharing with your friend in one room since no body check about it.
Generally, traveling to Indonesia is safe. It doesn’t mater Jakarta, Bali, Yogyakarta or other regions i Indonesia.

DEPENDNIG ON WHERE YOU STAY I ALSO WOULD LOCK UP IN YOUR PROVIDED SAFE ( YOU SHOULD HAVE ONE) ALL VALUABLE ITEMS BECAUSE LABOR AND UNDER PAID STAFF IS FAIRLY COMMON. TRAVELLING IN INDONESIA IS SAFE BUT JUST BE CAREFUL OF SIMPLE THINGS LIKE PICK POCKETING AND BEING SCREWED OVER WHEN PAYING FOR BILLS OR PURCHASES IN PLACES LIKE MARKET. Yes you can. Indonesia is very safe in 99% of places. You would not be able to stay in a hotel room together in some hotels in Medan, Sumatera, but others would allow it.
Don’t worry about this. Jakarta and Bali are really open.
